After being introduced to Laura Reece three years ago, I have not only had the pleasure of getting to know her, but also the pleasure of working with her, and in time have come to respect and admire her.

After coming to College of Charleston to get involved with the for-profit art world, Reece never imagined that through Dance Marathon and the arts management program that she would find a love non-profit fundraising.

Reece has made a difference in countless lives and I have no doubt that after graduation she will continue to volunteer countless hours and make a difference in many people’s lives.

Volunteer activities: I have been involved with Dance Marathon all four years of college and in the past I have also volun

teered with Charleston Miracle League and various arts organizations in Charleston.

What do you enjoy most about community service? What I enjoy most about community service is the feeling I get from helping people. I love getting to know the people I am working with and especially getting to know the people who I am helping. It is a wonderful feeling to know how much people appreciate your help and to know that you have made someone’s day a little brighter.

Most memorable volunteer experience: My most memorable volunteer experience is from sophomore year, which was my first year on the executive board for Dance Marathon. I got to experience all the work that goes into planning the event and also had the opportunity to visit MUSC Children’s Hospital and meet many of the children and families who directly benefit from Dance Marathon. I have never been as emotional as I was after that year’s Dance Marathon.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organization? I am most proud of contributing my love and enthusiasm for Dance Marathon and the importance of giving back to the community and MUSC Children’s Hospital.

How have you personally benefited from volunteering? Aside from being able to build my resume, the greatest benefit from volunteering is getting that “warm fuzzy feeling” that is so often talked about but rarely achieved.

At the end of the day after volunteering I can go to bed feeling like I have made a difference in someone’s life even if it is as simple as making someone smile.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? I would tell someone thinking about volunteering to choose an organization that they think they would get the most out of or enjoy the most. Once they choose an organization, make sure that they get to know the people they are working with and if they are able, get to know the people they are helping. It is always inspiring to know who you are helping and to be able to share a passion for volunteering with others.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? My friends and family would describe me as warm-hearted creative, and passionate. I would like to believe that if they were asked this question that they would also say I am funny, but it is entirely possible that they just laugh at my jokes to humor me.

What are your plans after graduation? I plan to get a job in development for the arts, and be lucky enough to come home from work every day with a smile on my face.

Helping Establish Literacy One Person at a Time

The rigorous class schedule of a College of Charleston Honor’s College student requires dedication, diligence, and hard work. With a schedule this strenuous, it is impossible to think that there is time for little else. However, Levi Vonk, currently a sophomore, has found the necessary balance to complete his school work and give back tremendously to the Charleston community.

Volunteer Activities: During the summer of 2010, Vonk worked with the Student Workers Action with Farmworkers in North Carolina, a nonprofit organization that “promotes the fair treatment of farmworkers within the southeast.” He was partnered with the Migrant Education Program for the Buncombe County School System, where he received the names and addresses of Hispanic migrant families that have moved into the area, allowing him to go to their houses to tutor their children during the summer, as well as assist the parents in learning basic English skills or English phrases that would assist them in American life.

Why did you choose to become involved in this particular project?

I believed that everyone deserved a fair and equal opportunity to learn how to read and speak English, especially if they truly want to achieve “the American Dream.” Children especially have a tough time as it is moving to a new country and by learning how to read English, I think that makes the transition much easier.

I’d probably have to go with hardworking and friendly.

What were your experiences with the Student Workers Action with Farmworkers Program?

I had the chance to meet so many hardworking charismatic people. These people want so badly to succeed in the United States and they work so hard every day of their lives to make that happen. To see what these people much endure on a daily basis is truly an eye opening experience.

Explain the beginnings of the Hola Amigos program

It was tough at first, because I had to find the necessary support to get the class started. Once people saw what I was trying to do, they jumped right on board. The students that attend the classes were so excited and eager to learn English.

What are your recommendations for someone trying to start a program as you did?

Don’t give up! Also, you have to stay committed to what you want to achieve. If you have a specific goal in mind, stick with it until it happens. It may seem hard to start a program or support a cause, but as long as you work hard, you’ll be happy with the outcome.

What are your plans following graduation?

I am honestly not too sure yet. I still have a couple of years, but as of right now? I will continue with the Hola program and possibly plan on attending graduate school and pursuing a degree in law.

Our first meeting was at Starbucks on Calhoun Street and we simply exchanged numbers and got a feeling of each other’s personalities. The more I got to know Tricia the more impressed I was with her enthusiasm. Tricia said that she grew up in a neighborhood where YMCA wasn’t in her community. As a result she strongly believes a lot of people from her area were uneducated.

Volunteer Activities: I along with a few other College of Charleston students volunteer a few times a week at the YMCA on Cannon Street, tutoring and playing with the children after school. In a typical I go up to the YMCA three to four days a week. I typically take Friday off because I play softball.

What do you enjoy most about community service? I really enjoy helping out the children. Nothing excites me like the look on their face when they figure out a math problem, or simply finish their homework. It gives me a sense of satisfaction to know that I can help others grow and learn. It really is one of the best feelings to know that you have helped some of the more unfortunate kids in our community. I get a great sense of satisfaction doing this and I plan to continue to help kids with my career.
How do you think your friends and family would describe you? I think they would all describe me as very caring and nurturing

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? I would tell them that they really won’t know how good it feels until they try it. Several years ago I had no idea that a little volunteer work could change how I felt that day. It will give you a sense of satisfaction knowing that you have helped someone else.
What has been your most memorable volunteer experience? My most memorable experiences have a lot to do with the sorority that I am involved in. I am a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and have had numerous fun experiences with my sisters. I also have a lot of good memories working at the YMCA. Playing basketball or duck duck goose with the little ones brings a smile to my face every day.
What are your plans after graduation? Well I am not positive, but I would like to be able to continue to work and help children. I believe I could make a great social worker or something along those lines. Law School is always in the back of my head as well.

Physical Therapy to Community Therapy

Karlye Fader is a determined woman gifted with empathy and grace. She enjoys the rewarding feeling she gets by giving back to those less fortunate than herself. She volunteers for several organizations in the community, while still holding a position in her sorority and doing well in her studies.

Karlye has devoted much of her time to helping others since high school when she volunteered for an organization that assisted adults with mental disabilities live on their own. Upon moving to Charleston, Fader was determined to find community work to give back to a city she loved so much. She did exactly that by volunteering at both MUSC and Charleston Miracle League. As if that was not enough, she became philanthropic hairman of the Tri Delta sorority, where she supports Saint Judes Children’s Hospital.

Fader takes pride in her eclectic service. She is happy that she can lend a helping hand to multiple people with varied needs.

Volunteer Activities: I volunteer for MUSC in the emergency room as well as the Inpatient Physical Therapy Clinic. I also volunteer for Charleston Miracle League to help children with disabilities play baseball. In addition to this, I am the philanthropy chairman for Delta Delta Delta at College of Charleston, where we support the children of St. Jude's Children’s hospital.

What do you enjoy most about community service? I love the sense of joy I feel after I have devoted my time to helping out in the community. After helping someone in need and seeing the appreciation on their face, it makes me feel good about myself and feel good about giving back to a community that has given so much to me.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience? Volunteering for Charleston Miracle League has definitely been my most memorable experience. Seeing the joy on the children’s’ faces while they are engaging in fun activities is the most rewarding part.

How does it personally benefit you? I have personally benefitted from volunteering because I have come to be very thankful for what I have and have learned to take nothing for granted.

What would I tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? I would tell someone to go for it. While, at first, it may seem a little awkward and uncomfortable, it gets so much better and at the end of the day you will walk away feeling very satisfied and proud for what you have just taken part in.

How do your friends and family describe you? I think my friends and family would describe me as a very loyal, passionate, and dedicated person. I am always willing to help people in need.

What are your plans after graduation? After graduation I plan to go to physical therapy school and receive my doctorate degree in physical therapy.

Volunteer Activities: I became a member of the Orientation Staff in 2010 and I recently started helping members of the REACH program here at the college. I’m also part of the Student Leadership Center and back home I do some volunteer work for one of the local churches.

What do you enjoy most about the orientation program and volunteering?

I like helping other people out. In Orientation, for the new students it is always helpful to have a guiding experience around campus and I enjoy showing them the college and making things easier for them, that way they know how where everything is before the semester starts.

I just want to help. I enjoy helping others. Volunteering is very rewarding.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you?

My friends and family see me as how I am…I am a caring and kind person who wants to help the people who most need it.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about being part of the orientation staff or volunteer program?

You have to be passionate whatever you do. You have to enjoy helping others. At first it sounds easy, but it is hard work. When I volunteer I find peace and I feel good.

What have been your most memorable experiences?

Life at college in general has been a memorable experience. I’ve found wonderful people here at the college and I like to be close to the beach.

College is a learning experience and it has been memorable all the way.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I’ll be very happy and I want to go back to Augusta for a few months. I like teaching and I hope to find a good opportunity in the education community. I will never give up till I find what I want.

"Everyone Needs To Feel Loved" By Katy Sinkler Shanell At The Special Olympics with a young friend

Shanell Ransom has her god brother to thank for her unique experience at the College of Charleston. Unlike many students Shanell spends a majority of her time volunteering when she is not in the classroom, so much time that she is the Student Director for Civic Engagements at C ofC for the Bonner Leadership Program. When she is not busy creating events for students on campus you can find her doing a little volunteering herself. Shanell currently volunteers with Therapeutic Recreation for Mental Disabilities a few times a week. Shanell developed a passion for helping those with mental disabilities when she was younger, she would help out with her god brother who could not speak, and it was then she realized she felt bothered when they would go out in public and people would stare or treat him differently so she decided she was going to help make the change. Shanell feels that everyone needs help, should be treated equally and deserves to feel loved and that is what she does. Shanell helps with people who have mental disabilities and wants them to know they are no different from you or me. It is important for her to know that everyone feels loved. Shanell currently works with people anywhere from elementary age up to 60 years old. Shanell spends one-on-one time helping them with sports, games, activities, reading, writing, etc.

What is your most memorable volunteering experience? Last summer when I was a swim coach and there was a guy, who had to walk with a cane and had very limited arm use, we were trying to get him to use his arms and every day we he would try but not much would happen. By the end of the summer watching him is able to extend his entire arm even though it caused him pain, and swim in the pool was very memorable. I felt I was able to reach him he accomplished something and show great appreciation for our help.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organization? Being able to serve others, I would rather be the person who makes someone smile, but have a smile on my face at the same time. I am proud that I am contributing to make the world a better place. How do you think your friends and family would describe you? Bubbly caring soul, always smiling and extremely happy but mindful of my surroundings. Always willing to serve when needed and least expected.

What would you tell someone who is thinking of volunteering? DO IT… Have an open mind and be prepared, you can do it and help make the world we live in a better place.

What are your plans after graduation? My plans are to go to Law School if I do not go to Law School right away I plan to take a year to give service.

JACOB KELLER – Operation Smile

Making a Difference, One Smile at a Time

Jacob Keller was a high school athlete with big aspirations. Wanting to get involved with a meaningful organization his freshman year, he joined Operation Smile. When he transferred high schools, he started a new chapter. Now, six years after his first exposure to the organization, Keller is the founder and president of CofC’s Operation Smile.

Operation Smile is a non-governmental organization and charity that rallies medical professionals and volunteers. Together, they provide free reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities. The most common deformities are cleft lip and cleft palate.

Each year more than 200,000 children are born with a severe cleft condition. These children are unable to eat, speak, or socialize. In many cases, poverty blocks access to the simple corrective surgeries.

Keller speaks with pride and humility about his work with Operation Smile. Through the organization, he’s traveled all over the world – recently Cambodia and India – and impacted the lives of countless children.

ABOUT JACOB KELLER…

Hometown: New Providence, N.J.

Major: International Relations

Graduation: Spring 2013

Volunteer Activities: Before Operation Smile, I built bridges in Wisconsin and in New York, I gave jackets and peanut butter sandwiches to homeless people in New York City. Now, I do a bunch of stuff with Operation Smile… everything from awareness-raising to fundraising to going on missions.

As a high school student, you go and teach kids and their families about nutrition, dental hygiene, and burn care and prevention. You’re educating them on things that can basically save lives in the future.

You also assist doctors during (medical) screenings – to see if patients can survive surgery – often patients have never seen a doctor before.

What do you enjoy most about your service? When we go, we help doctors by distracting patients so the doctors can do what they need to do. We hang out with kids before and after surgery – it’s kind of a stressful ordeal for them. We bring bubbles and toys to alleviate the stress.

What was your most memorable experience? There was one kid in Cambodia who was from the northern part of the country. He was an orphan and had burn scars all over his face and body, and he had a cleft palate. One of the workers (for Operation Smile) wanted to bring him to Phnom Penh – which was where we were – to have surgery. The orphanage didn’t want to let him (have the surgery), so the guy quit his job, sold a bunch of stuff and took the kid to Phnom Penh.

What are you most proud of contributing to Operation Smile? What I’m proudest of is probably seeing the difference we make and the smiles we create, not to be cliché. That’s what I’m most proud of – not the difference that I can make, but the difference anyone can make.

What have you enjoyed the most about your volunteering? I enjoy the traveling. I like seeing new things, but probably the most rewarding thing is just seeing the difference that you can do. It’s just a really cool feeling.

Another cool thing about the organization is that you meet people from all over the world. In Cambodia, I was there with my mission partner – we were both from New Jersey – and there were surgeons from the Philippines and anesthesiologists from India, and doctors and pediatricians from Russia. Now I have friends on every continent.

How have you personally benefited from volunteering? I’ve definitely grown more humble. You just see things from a different light. As you grow, you leave your comfort zone. You work from six in the morning to nine at night, you get a few hours of sleep, get up and do it again, and again, and again, and somehow you’re not tired at all. It definitely helps you grow.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? Anybody can make a difference. It’s proven. But you have to have the dedication. There are going to be obstacles. If you’re thinking about doing it, give it a shot. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. If you like it, stick with it.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? Hopefully in a good light!

What are your plans after graduation? I want to work for Operation Smile as a mission coordinator. (Operation Smile) hires people right out of college, and what you do is oversee everything from working with the hospitals, to working with the hotels that the whole mission is staying at, to getting the medical supplies. You work with everything and I think that’d be really cool. It’s a two year term. After that, I don’t know.

There is no denying that College of Charleston student Kara Cronin has a selfless love for volunteering. And with her contagious smile and spirit, it is no wonder that she has touched the lives of so many people. Kara is a freshman from Manchester, N.H., majoring in communication. She is also an active and dedicated member of CofC's Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Kara says her mother raised her to believe that the best way to feel good about herself is by uplifting others, and she has been volunteering for as long as she can remembr. Kara has assisted many organizations such as the Make A Wish Foundation, Special Olympics, Kristin's Gift Foundation, and the YMCA.

What do you enjoy most about community service? The thing I enjoy most about community service is how much the people I'm assissting appreciate my help. There's no better feeling than knowing you made a difference, whether it be to one person or to an entire organization.

Most memorable volunteer experience? Definitely the Make A Wish send-offs where I dress up as Minnie Mouse and say goodbye to the kids as they leave for their Disney wishes.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organizations? I would have to say my enthusiasm towards the causes I work with. I was very close to a girl who died of cancer at age 15. Having witnessed her wish granted by the Make A Wish Foundation just before she lost her battle gave our family incentive to get on board and do whatever we could to enhance wishes for kids like Kristin. I can't tell you how many times I've donned the Mickey or Minnie Mouse costume and visited little kids who needed cheering up! Let's just say that more than a time or two my Facebook profile picture has featured me with a big head... and a polka dot bow and dress! Also, just after school began, and about one minute after receiving a CofC email message announcing a chapter of the Special Olympics was being started here, I emailed the president that I wanted to be a part of its beginning and its success. I guess I am proud that I acted so quickly instead of waiting for someone else to do so.

How have you personally benefited from volunteering? I think volunteering is in my blood. I never knew a time in my life that didn't involve community service of some kind. My mom, who definitely got it passed down from her dad before her, taught me through so many "family volunteering events" that the best way to feel good about yourself is to help lift others up. In fact, my earliest memories are of our Saturday morning visits to the local nursing home where my sister and I would crawl onto the laps of residents to sing little songs or just deliver hugs to those who didn't often have visitors. Volunteering has given me a better understanding of the different populations I've worked with and a deeper appreciation for what I am grateful for in my own life.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? I would tell them it is all about taking the first step. There are so many opportunities out there, and the "feel good" goes both ways. Plus, you meet a lot of great people when you get involved, never knowing what it might lead to next.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? My friends and family have always described me as someone with a quick smile, an easy personality, who is very comfortable to be around. They say I can blend well with all types of people...and I have to wonder if that is due in part to my my history of volunteering.

What are your plans for after graduation? I want to go into the communication field whether is be in PR, broadcast journalism or something of that nature. I would love to be involved with Special Education in some way as well. It's still early for me, so i'm keeping my options open.

More information on Kara's volunteer organization: The Special Olympics Club on campus just started this past semester and we were just officially recognized as a club right before Christmas break. I helped start up the club along with Emily Rogers, Emmie Clisham, Claire Niccolato and Garrett Porter and took on the positions of secretary and social events chair. Since we are just getting our feet off the ground, we haven't had a chance to do too much yet, but what we have done has been a blast. Two other officers and I recently attended a SOSC (Special Olympics South Carolina) conference where we got to interact with high school volunteers, board members, and the athletes themselves. CofC has the only club on the collegiate level in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia and now we're spreading the word to other schools in the area to get them involved as well. I think it's really cool that we can say we started it, especially since the athletes enjoy our involvement so much.

We had volunteers at the MidWinter games over spring break who all said that they had an incredible experience. We're currently working on setting up weekly or monthly activites for the athletes to play with our own CofC athletic teams and we're looking forward to holding a field day early next fall where all the athletes an volunteers can come out and play a variety of their favorite sports with new friends.

NANCY AUSTIN - Dance Marathon

Getting It All Done and
Still Having Time for Fun

When I first started talking with Nancy Austin, I was blown away by all the things she is able to get done in a day. She is taking a full load of classes, and they are hard; I would know, I am in a few of them. Along with those classes she is on the executive board of two different student organizations. She is part of the pre-medical student group, Alpha Epsilon Delta(AED), as well as part of one of the largest philanthropy groups at the College of Charleston. She has been a part of Dance Marathon since she came to the College and she joined the executive board this past year.

She amazes me with all that she does. Sometimes I have even heard her say that she has been up doing things for various classes or clubs since four in the morning! If anybody deserves to be recognized by Cougar Volunteer Spirit it is Nancy Austin. She brightens the day of everyone around her and still manages to do well in school and give back to the community.

Volunteer Activities: I have been attending Dance Marathon since my freshman year at College of Charleston. My freshman year I made a team with my roommates. During my sophomore and junior year I was the Team Captain of the on-campus Baptist Christian Ministry's team. For my senior year I am the Hospitality chair on the executive board for Dance Marathon. I have also been a part of AED where I have been Food chair for one year.

What do you enjoy most about community service? I think it is fun to see how my actions can affect other people. With some organizations you can't see the direct effect you have on people but with Dance Marathon you get to see that direct effect that you have on families and their children.

Most memorable volunteer experience? The first day I volunteered in the emergency room at the Medical University of South Carolina, the doctors were showing me around and they pulled back the curtain around one of the beds and there was a patient lying there with his guts spilled out on the table! It was quite an experience. I can honestly say I well never forget that day for the rest of my life.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organizations? I'm most proud of being able to recruit people. I enjoy spreading the word about MUSC's Children's Hospital. I like being able to help the families.

How have you personally benefited from volunteering? With volunteering I have become much more organized. I've developed my time management skills along with people skills that you normally wouldn't be able to pick up on the street. When you're at Dance Marathon you get to meet some of the families you're actually helping and when you talk to them you have to be conscious of what you say and how you say it. It's those skills that I've acquired during my volunteer work with Dance Marathon.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? Do it!

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? I think my friends and family would describe me as hard working, generally optimistic, and cheerful.

What are your plans after graduation? After graduation I'm going to take a few more classes here at the College of Charleston and I'll hopefully be working in a hospital. After that I plan on applying to Physician's Assistant school.

A Major Tax Deduction by Sailing Camp

Brady Savage, a Junior at the College of Charleston, has been involved in community service for most of his adult life. So after leaving his hometown of Grosse Pointe, M.I. he began looking for new organizations to continue his community services. Being in the top of his class for the accounting school, Savage was approached by VITA Tax Support to join in helping underprivileged local citizens with their annual tax needs.VITA serves to support people in their tax needs through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.

Savage started his community service in the seventh grade by joining his mother in her Meals on Wheels routes. Savage says, "She really is the one that got me started with my community service, I went out with her one day and had a blast helping others who were less fortunate that we were."

Savage, a decorated seaman, has been giving free sailing lessons every summer since he was 14 years old. He says, " I don't even consider teaching kids how to sail a community service. I just happened to be really good at it, and good with children. The kids really make me feel better that I make them feel, and having another reason to be out on a sailboat is bliss."

What exactly do you do at your volunteer activities?

Well, for VITA, I sit down in a pre-assigned cubicle and literally walk people through their tax forms. If they are capable and willing, I show them how to do their own taxes. We also let them know that by teaching them how to do their own taxes does not mean that they are not allowed to come back next year. We encourage that they do come back and allow us to walk them through it again, or double check after what they have done. For the sailing camp I teach local kids how to sail. We teach them the values that sailing will offer them as well as the safety precautions that come with sailing.

What do you enjoy most about your volunteer services?

When I leave, knowing that I helped somebody other than myself, it is a really good feeling. Call it being selfish, but I really enjoy feeling good about doing something for a complete stranger.

What was your most memorable volunteer service experience?

There have been a lot of "close calls" out there sailing, but one time a kid did get knocked off his boat. I jumped in after him to make sure he was going to be ok. He was unconscious for less than a minute. All the other counselors credited me with saving his life, but I was just acting off pure instincts, and he would have been fine without my immediate assistance. It odes feel good to know that I am prepared for the worst if the real situation ever occurs.

How have you benefited from your volunteer experiences?

Just the satisfaction of helping others is benefit enough for me. Other than that I can say that my patience level has increased greatly through both of my community service experiences. I enjoy what I do and as long as the time permits I will continue doing it.

If one of your friends were asked to describe you, what would they say?

I hope they would describe me as somebody that likes to have fun, meet new people, and as somebody that likes to help others. I am sure they would throw in a few other characteristics, but those are the three that pretty much sum it all up.

What would you tell somebody who was considering volunteering?

Do it, but only if you are really passionate about the service you are about to join. It doesn't matter if you are not amazing at what you are going to be helping with, you being there is help enough. This really means a lot to the people that you are helping, so you should be very passionate about helping them.

What are your plans for after graduation?

I plan on going straight to grad school. I hope to get into Michigan State. They have a really good accounting program and will surely be able to secure me a position at one of the big four accounting firms. I can't say that during grad school, but after I am sure some free tax services options will continue to be explored.

The Sweetest Girl on Campus

It does not take long after first meeting Dede Bearden to realize how genuine of a person she truly is. She will freely tell you that she did not have the easiest time adjusting to life at the College of Charleston after moving from her hometown, Nashville, Tenn. Now that she is more settled as a junior, she has definitely found her niche and made a solid name for herself around campus, and a great one at that.

If you were to ask the people who know Dede the best, they would tell you that she is one of the more thoughtful people that they know. Whether it is remembering a friend’s birthday, doing activities as her sorority’s vice president or volunteering as a tutor at the local YMCA twice a week, she is always thinking about how to enrich peoples’ lives around her.

What do you enjoy most about community service?

What I like about volunteering is that it allows you to step out of your own world or "bubble." College students, especially, can easily get too caught up into their own problems or daily life. We have school, jobs, and sometimes fraternities or sororities to think about, and we forget that there is a community outside of our college environment. By volunteering, you get perspective back on bigger issues. You also gain appreciation for the things you have. On a day-to-day basis, I often forget how lucky I am, and volunteering can reopen your eyes to that.

What would you say your most memorable volunteer experience ever was?

When I was in eighth grade, my class went to volunteer at a local soup kitchen as a field trip. It was one of my first experiences volunteering, and I was so moved by the organization and working for the homeless, that I wrote a letter to the head of the soup kitchen. I also donated my 16th birthday money to the non-profit called Samaritan Ministries. When I sent the check for a few hundred dollars as well as my letter Samaritan ministries called me. They had News Channel 5 in Nashville come to my house to interview me and put me on TV. I was on the local news as the "volunteer of the week."

Helping Others When They Need It Most

Cassie Wise is one Cougar that has your back...literally. The CofC junior spends her free time volunteering with College of Charleston Fire and EMS, offering students, faculty, and staff with free medical care.

Before coming to College of Charleston, Wise volunteered with Six Forks EMS in her hometown of Raleigh, N.C. She started volunteering with CofC EMS as a freshman and now serves as the team's chief of training. Her duties include conducting bi-monthly training meetings to keep her team up-to-date on procedures and protocols.

Committed to serving her fellow Cougars and the Charleston community, Wise is running for this year's program director, where she intends to give back even more. With three years under her belt, what she enjoys most is "being able to help the community when they need help the most."

Volunteer Activities: As a senior in high school I started volunteering with Six Forks EMS. When I came to College of Charleston I started volunteering with the school's programs, but during breaks when I go back home I still volunteer with Six Forks.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience? Well there are many patient stories that have stuck with me over the years, but I'm not allowed to share those. So I guess, the most memorable would be ranking 8th in the National Collegiate EMS competition last year. I along with three other team members traveled to Baltimore, M.D. to compete in the competition where we had to perform protocols for different medical scenarios.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organization? There are two things that I am most proud of. One is that I helped our division go from BLS (Basic Life Support) certified to ILS (Immediate Life Support) certified. Now that we are ILS certified we can start IV's (Intravenous Therapy) and give out medicine. I'm also proud of the mock car crash CofC EMs put on last semester on George Street because I was the one to come up with the idea. I wanted to show students that CofC EMs does more than hand out band-aids and get people in trouble for being drunk.

How have you personally benefited from volunteering? Thanks to this exprerience I have better decision-making abilities, I work well under stress and I have good time management skills. This type of volunteer work has also allowed me to work with and treat various types of people; therefore I have learned to work well with all of them no matter the circumstances.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? To not be afraid to step up, and don't be intimidated that you are on an emergency scene. Just take a step back and take a deep breath, definitely don't panic.

How do you think friends and family would describe you? Hopefully as someone who works hard and knows when its time to focus. I've actually been referred to as a bad ass, which I'm pretty proud of.

What are your plans after graduation? My plans after college are to go into the Navy as a nuclear officer. I would stay with navy for six years, where I would be stationed on an aircraft carrier. Hopefully I'll be stationed abroad because I would love to travel.

Making Everyone Feel Accepted

Leander Hamrick keeps a busy schedule. From being a full-time student, working at an after school program at Hanahan Elementary School, and acting as the president for Best Buddies at the College of Charleston, she always has something to keep her busy.

As we continued to talk about her volunteering with special needs kids and her aspirations for the future, being a part of Best Buddies makes perfect sense since it is a nonprofit organization that establishes one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Not only does she hope to work in a learning disabilities classroom at an elementary school, but she also wants to work in getting her master’s to practice speech pathology.

Finding the time to volunteer as much as she does in her out of control schedule only adds to her appeal. While speaking with Leander on what it’s like being the president of such a well-known organization that has chapters on campuses all throughout the country, it’s easy to see the gratification and the love for what she does in her eyes. Then again, it’s not surprising that after she graduates she hopes to continue working with special needs kids.

Volunteer Activities: Besides being the president of the College of Charleston chapter of Best Buddies, I volunteer at a local nursing home when I can and I’ve fed the homeless on Thanksgiving Day. I have also taught vocation bible school for both 4-year-olds and special needs kids.

What do you enjoy most about community service? The thing that I most enjoy about community service is getting to see the happiness it brings to other people. If there is anything I can do to help someone in need I am willing to do it. It not only helps others but it broadens my experiences and knowledge of other cultures.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience? One of my most memorable volunteer experiences was feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving Day. This was important to me because I did this with my entire family. Although my family and I did not have a formal Thanksgiving like we normally do, we could see the impact we had on the families that we fed. Without our effort they would not have had the Thanksgiving dinner that I am accustomed to.

What are you most proud of contributing to Best Buddies? I am proud of being a leader for such a great organization. One major issue in the disabled community is being accepted in the community. Best Buddies is a great way to get these individuals seen within the community and lessen the stigma of intellectual disabilities. Not only are the individuals seen in the community, they also participate in community service and give back to the community. It is a chance to help multiple and various people all at one time.

How have you personally benefitted from volunteering? I have grown a lot as a person. Volunteering not only helps others, but it also helps you grow as a person and helps you in finding out what truly is important.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? To volunteer in an area that is important to you. Best Buddies is a perfect volunteer opportunity for me because I am going into the field of special education. There are so many volunteer opportunities. Find something that interests you and what you might want to do one day. It will be worth it!

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? My friends and family would describe me as busy and determined. I am extremely busy with school, work, and community service. I am determined to be as educated and as knowledgeable as I can be about all subjects. Ultimately I want to be a well-rounded person and my friends and family realize that I strive for that everyday.

What are your plans after graduation? After graduation I will teach in an elementary school in a learning disabilities classroom. I will eventually get my Masters of Communication Disorders and practice speech pathology. Ultimately I would love to get my doctorate and open my own speech pathology practice.

When I first met Elise Lasko I was impressed by her passion, and level of involvement in organizations at the college. She encouraged me to join Students in Free Enterprise SIFE when we were sophomores, and I have been a dedicated member since.

Elise has been involved on campus for the past four years. She stays busy but still makes time to go to the beach and hang out with her friends on the weekend. She is from Poland, Ohio, and has been vacationing to Charleston since she was a child.

Elise has made the most of her college career by being involved in many different organizations on campus. Through her involvement with on-campus organizations, she has volunteered many times to help others. She is well known in the business school for hard work and interaction with the faculty.

What do you enjoy most about community service? I really like working one on one with people who are benefiting from the service being provided. For me, the best way to learn is through helping others through service related projects. I also believe that everyone can mutually benefit from each other when working together.

Most memorable volunteer experience? Global Brigades Microfinance brigade in Hondoras and Technology for Africa in Cameroon. It's a tie. Based on my experience traveling to Cameroon two years ago and seeing what an impact seven other SIFE students and I had made by bringing technology and teaching about entrepreneurship, I was very inspired to continue doing projects focused on empowerment. By partnering with the Global Brigades, College of Charleston's Cougar Microfinance Club and Carnegie Mellon students formed our own microfinance brigade. For the week of spring break, we traveled to Honduras where we spent the week in the coffee growing community of El Zurzular, which the global brigades had recently opened a community bank called the Caja Rural. During that week we met with several families and learned about the ways in which they live, work, and save and spend money. By the end of our trip, we had implemented savings incentive programs, increased community membership in the Caja, and had empowered individuals to grow beyond their potential.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organizations? Seeing the contributions that my fellow team members and I made as freshmen and sophomores and seeing then grow to what they have become now. The Technology for Africa project in particular hasmade a huge impact since the planning in 2008. I am so proud to have been a part of the original group and watching how the Tech for Africa 2 team this year continued the legacy by returning to Cameroon this spring break, bringing smart boards, more lap tops, and further perpetuating the project. I never could have imagined as a freshman being able to make a difference abroad, and organizations like SIFE taught me how I can truly make a difference in the world.

Have you personally benefitted from volunteering? All of the organizations I have been a part of go far beyond simply volunteering in the community. Student groups such as SIFE, SAA, and the Cougar Microfinance Club require commitments that push its members beyond what is expected and allow them to truly make an impact on their surroundings. By being a part of these wonderful groups, I have expanded my network in Charleston and beyond, learned how to become a leader, and also discover my passion for sustainable development.

What would you tell someone who was thinking about volunteering? Do not just volunteer because it makes you feel good. Volunteer to help improve a cause or someone's life, and also try to learn from each of the experiences you have while doing this work.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? They would describe me as really busy, determined, and passionate for the things I love. What are your plans for after graduation? I am currently interviewing for some positions abroad but cannot say my definite plans at this moment. Hint: I really want to work in a Spanish speaking country for a year with a sustainable development organization.

Making a Difference

Elizabeth Pappas is not your typical college girl. She is not only a double major, at the top of her class, and an active member of several student organizations, but she still makes time to relax with friends and enjoy the college life.

Originally from St. Simons Island, Ga., Elizabeth has been volunteering since her high school days. She has participated in raising money for local charities in Georgia, has taken two trips to assist in the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief, built homes for Habitat for Humanity, and is currently a mentor in the Communities in Schools program at the McNair Academy in North Charleston.

Elizabeth’s outgoing personality and motivation to succeed has made her a force to be reckoned with on campus. She is currently a senator in the Student Government Association and has worked on several political campaigns during her college career, including Governor Nikki Haley’s recent successful campaign to become South Carolina's first woman and minority governor.

What do you enjoy most about community service?

Giving back to my community. My mentorship at the McNair Academy helps me realize how much the people in my community are in need and how every little bit counts. The four hours I spend weekly with the two girls I mentor has made a huge difference in their lives as well as in mine. I’ve learned that taking time from my week to help others may not be “easy” but seeing the improvement in their reading, self-confidence and maturity makes it all worthwhile. There is nothing like knowing you just did something completely selfless that has made a huge impact on someone’s life.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience?

Participating in the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief program was completely amazing and unforgettable. My first trip down was only a few weeks after the disaster and my group and I had the intent of finding a family who needed manpower and help cleaning up their property. We found a man trying to clean his destroyed home alone because he had sent his family to stay with relatives in Texas. He was trying to clean up what was left of his home and move the debris to the street to get it picked up. We spent the next two days with this man, moving pieces of his home to the street to be swept away. When we returned home, my group and I set up a fund for the man and his family to help with any further costs to rebuild his life. Helping that man was one of the best things I’ve ever experienced and made me that much more appreciative of my life.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organization(s)?

The improvements I’ve seen in the girls’ I mentor at the McNair Academy. Their self-confidence and ability to answer a question and not think they are always wrong has made my time worthwhile. I know I have made a difference in their lives and I only hope they know they have done the same for me.

How have you personally benefitted from volunteering?

Volunteering has definitely made me more aware of my surroundings and how much people really do need help, inside and outside of your community. A small contribution of my services or time can be so influential and helpful that it really makes me wonder why more people don’t choose to give a little of their time.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?

There is nothing more rewarding than giving a small part of yourself and your time for the good of others. Volunteering makes you a better person and learning to give without the expectation of a reward is definitely the most rewarding part.

How do you think your family would describe you?

Independent, driven, and extraterrestrial

What are your plans after graduation?

I’d like to work as a legislative aide in D.C. for a year or two and then consider law school.

To Ghana and Back

Susanna Brylawski isn't your typical college girl. Rather than spending free her free time after school hanging out with friends, she's spent her afternoons feeding the homeless. Instead of heading to the beach to get a tan, Susanna chose to dedicate her summer to teaching geography to orphans in Ghana.

With her crazy, curly hair piled atop of her head, skin spotted with red and yellow paint, and donning welding boots, Susanna took the time from her artistic endeavors to tell me about her love affair with helping people. Eyes wide and bright, she told me of her plans to change the world, armed only with her two God-given hands.

I volunteered at my church's soup kitchen throughout high school. I prepared and served dinner to over 200 people. In 2010, I traveled to Accra, Ghana to work in two orphanages. The first one, Peace and Love orphanage, I cleaned and pained their dormitories and other facilites. The second place, Hope and Love Foster Home, I taught kids geography.

What Do You Enjoy Most About Community Service:

I love knowing that I have helped others at no cost to our society.

Most Memorable Volunteer Experience:

My most memorable volunteer experience was at Peace and Love Orphanage. One of my friends volunteering with me became really close with an orphan. During out last day of service, the little girl gave my friend a touching letter saying that she would never forget their friendship. My friend broke down in tears.

What Are You Most Proud of Contributing to Your Organization(s):

I am most proud of contributing with just my set of hands. There is nothing I could have accomplished on my own. I could have never accomplished anything by myself, but knowing that my set of hands was part of a greater force makes me really proud.

When first meeting Sam I noticed how committed she is to all of her work. She is very impressive working two jobs, going to school, working on her bachelor's essay, and volunteering for one overnight shift a month. She is so dedicated to school that she is graduating a semester early. Not only is she dedicated to school but she also likes to help other people. While working for PAR (People Against Rape) she has talked to people who have just been raped or people that were raped in the past and are having a hard time.

Volunteer Activities: People Against Rape (PAR)- I have been working with them for over a year.

What do you enjoy most about community service: Doing something that is completely for another person, something that is selfless. With this organization it is just about helping another person because it is anonymous. There is no credit to be given to anyone. Its a pure motivation.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organization: Just another pair of hands. Everyone I work with is extremely caring and passionate. In a city you don't realize how important this resource is.Most memorable volunteer experience: I once had to go to the ER at 6 a.m. when I had to work at 9. The female cop working on the case didn't believe that the girl was raped. Later I was walking on campus and the girls step dad stopped and asked me for advice because the law enforcement still didn't believe the girl and she was having a really hard time.

How have you personally benefited from volunteering: I am a psychology major and want to counsel people so this is good experience. It helps me not to be ignorant about rape, it is important to know how common it is.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering: I would tell them that my biggest hesitation was work but you can always make the time to volunteer.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you: Strong, driven, compassionate, hard working, and very open.

Student Saving Puppies, One Week At A Time

Each Saturday College of Charlestons senior Anslee Johnson finds herself in both tears of joy and tears of happiness, saying goodbye to one child and welcoming a new one. The difference with her and most mothers? Her children are all puppies! A volunteer since the beginning of 2011, Anslee has committed herself and her time to Palmetto Paws Animal Rescue. Each week she shares her home with some of Charleston’s finest and youngest of furry friends. She has always had a love for animals and this is just another opportunity to show it. Besides animals, Anslee also enjoys traveling and learning about new cultures. She spent her Christmas vacation in Dubai with the College’s business program, and plans to travel to France this summer to continue her studies in art and the language itself. In the fall Anslee will return to Charleston for school as well as Palmetto Paws.

A Closer Look at Our Volunteer...

Previous Volunteer Work: I used to volunteer with Friendship Trays, a food delivery program providing for the elderly and disabled.

Today’s Volunteer work: This year I got involved with Palmetto Paws Animal Rescue. It’s amazing! I provide temporary care for dogs and puppies. Each Saturday I receive a new dog or puppy to foster. During the week I prepare the animal for adoption into a permanent home. This helps prevent overcrowding in our animal shelters as well as gives the dog or puppy love and attention. Hopefully when I return the following Saturday a family is ready to adpot. So far I have fostered four dogs; Gia (1yr mutt), Rebel (1 ½ yr dachshund), Kingston ( 3 months shepherd terrier mix) and Charlotte (3 month pitt/shepherd mix.)

How has this experience been so far? : I totally got hooked fostering the first time. I love being able to come home and play with them after class.The puppies are a lot of fun but tons more work!!! The older dogs are much more relaxed and easy to take care of. At the same time its very sad knowing their chance of adoption is much smaller.

What has been the hardest part? Saying goodbye! I cried when my first dog, Gia, got adopted but now I am used to giving them up after a week. I’m happy to see them get adopted into a loving family and to know they will finally live in a stable home. Although it’s hard to let go, I’m excited to know I played a part in their adjustment into this new life.

What has been the most positive part of this service? Fostering is a much more productive use of my time. It helps in decreasing stress and increases positive feelings and mental health. It also enables me to forge bonds with members of the community and increases my social network. I have gained a great sense of responsibility. It has also given me the chance to have a dog/puppy without the full commitment. Whether its because I’m traveling soon, or just having a busy week ahead, its a way to love a pet, during a time I may not be able to really have my own. Fostering is a win-win situation.

What would your friends and family have to say? I have always loved animals so I think it would come as no surprise. In fact, I know they’re happy I found the perfect outlet to help with something I love.

What would be your advice to someone who is debating doing volunteer

work? Do it! Get involved in your community! You’re both giving back, and keeping busy in a positive way. College is a hectic time, but this helps maintain a good schedule besides just academics. It’s a great experience where you can just simply be you, and enjoy.

Do you think this experience will leave a long lasting impression on you?

How so? Yes, absolutely! I will always remember the experience and love the people I have met, I want to stay involved after college and maybe start my own rescue/foster service when I am older.

As a graduating senior, what advice do you offer to an incoming CofC

freshman? Listen to your parents and get involved with something you love!

Student-Athlete Gets Head Start On Serving the Community

For as long as she can remember, Kaitlin McWhorter and her family have been making trips to nearby soup kitchens every holiday season. Kaitlin has since continued such traditions; she wakes up every Tuesday and Thursday at the crack of dawn to prepare breakfast by 5:30 am at the shelter.

Kaitlin is a pioneer. She is a young, active, student-athlete who still finds time to do community service every week between mandatory study halls, practice, travel and meets. Her abilities in track & field include: shot put, high jump, long jump, and the 50 meter dash.

Despite the fact that this is only her first year in college, Kaitlin comes out of the gate in a sprint. She takes advantage of every free moment and plays bingo with senior citizens in her spare time. She also works at two shelters.

What do you enjoy most about your experience? My favorite part is listening to people’s different stories. You really get to meet quite the variety of people. But hearing what people have been through always amazes me.

Most memorable experience? Well, one young man’s story has really stuck with me. He came to the shelter as an 18 year old. His mother recently died and she was the last person in his family that he had left. He was put on the street with no sense of income, so he turned to Crisis Ministries. He plans to join the Navy.

Proudest Contribution? Well I am developing relationships with people that I would never otherwise get to know, but [laughs] I am just giving back to the community one grit at a time.

Personal benefits from volunteering? It makes me feel good about myself, and it has changed my outlook on a lot of things in the city. I’m not quick to judge people I see on the street. Everyone has their own stories, and why they are where they are.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? It’s a great experience, try to do it as much as you can. I’m trying to do 100 hours by the end of this year. Right now I’m only at 20.

How would your friends and family describe you? A thoughtful and caring individual.

Plans for after graduation? I want to be in the Peace Corps two years, and after that I am planning on going to grad school for physical therapy with a concentration in special education.

Katherine Lee: a courageous, loving, and talented giver. Giving to others has always been a part of Katherine's everyday life and it is something she receives great joy in doing.

As a senior at the College of Charleston, Katherine is the captain of the frisbee team and a active participant in service learning. Not only is she able to mentor other individuals while volunteering but she also promotes positive attitude and team work on the field as well.

As a great friend of mine, I can confidently say that Christianity is a big part of her life and has been a motivator in her mission to help others. This mission is clear in her volunteer experience with various organizations such as the Lowcountry Pregnancy Center and Hotdogs for the Homeless.

What do you enjoy most about community service? I really enjoy just getting to meet people in the community and bonding together with people with you may not have met outside of school and also, just feeling like you are apart of something outside of your comfort zone.

Most memorable volunteer experience? The work I did my sophomore and junior year with Hotdogs for the Homeless. Every Thursday night it was great just spending time with the homeless community of Charleston and building relationships with people who usually get overlooked by others and just hearing their life stories while connecting with them and building friendships with them.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organization? Just my time. There are a lot of different places I could spend my time but when you volunteer at a place consistently you see your time going to good use and you are not wasting it.

How have you personally benefitted from volunteering? It has definitely opened my eyes to the needs of the Charleston community, and allows me a certain part of the city that I wouldn't be able to see unless I was involved in community service.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? Do it, just do it. It is a great place to meet people, it's fun, and it is a way to find strengths that you would have never known about yourself. Also, just connecting with people is such a valuable experience.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? My friends and family would day that I am fun-loving (she laughs) and that I just love to be around people and serve people. I definitely think I have a heart to serve and to just step outside of myself and give back to those because I have just been given so much.

What are your plans after graduation? (she laughs) I think this summer I am going to move back home and do some work at a local hospital in their psychology department and I have applied for an internship back in Charleston in the fall at an organization called My Sister's House which is a organization that works with women and their children who have suffered from domestic violence. But besides that, I am just going wherever the wind blows me, my sails are up (she says laughing).

Mary Pappas has been one of my good friends for about three years of my college career. She is a kind, ambitious and wonderful person. She always makes everyone happy and it is done as no choir to her.

Originally from Charlotte, N.C., Mary has lived in Charleston for four years now and considers the Holy City home. She says there is something about the city that she just doesn't want to leave. I automatically agreed with her when she said this.

Mary has spent her years here at the College of Charleston making the most of her opportunities. You can either find Mary interning at the City of Charleston's Office of Cultural Affair, volunteering for one of many organizations or hanging out with her friends.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES: I volunteer at three different organizations such as A Caring Heart Hospice, Habitat for Humanity, and the Outreach Learning Center. At the Caring Heart Hospice, I spend time talking with the elderly and keeping them company. We play games such as bingo or go on walks with them. At Habitat for Humanity I screen families to see if they are eligible for home assistance. The Outreach Learning Center is for inner city kids that come here after school where we help them with their homework and make snacks with them.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT COMMUNITY SERVICE?: I like seeing results its enjoyable to work with an organization or an individual and see progress. I like that I know that I am helping someone that is not as fortunate as some people are.

MOST MEMORABLE VOLUNTEER SERVICE: My most memorable volunteer experience was doing the family screenings for Habitat for Humanity. I loved being able to look into the eyes of the families and tell them they were eligible for a house.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF CONTRIBUTING TO YOUR ORGANIZATIONS: I'm proud that people go to organizations to help. Non-profits and volunteers have so much to give that they need people to ask for help. It shows true character when people go out of their way to help other people.

HOW HAVE YOU PERSONALLY BENEFITED FROM VOLUNTEERING: I have personally benefited from this because I have met a lot of great people. To hospice patients, to habitat workers; all have been great to me.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT VOLUNTEERING: I would recommend it. No matter where you are, volunteering it is always a beneficial experience. It's good for not only you, but also for the people you are helping.

HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY WOULD DESCRIBE YOU: Well to sum it all up in a couple words I would have to say loving, caring, giving, friendly, outgoing, and helpful.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: I plan on staying in Charleston and continue my volunteering. I also have plans to travel around Europe for a couple of months.

Amusement Can Be Fun and Fulfilling

Tommy Werner strives to give back Charleston's community of children and families. He volunteered with and now works for Charleston Children's Museum to help foster learning, fun and creativity with the children who visit.

Werner is a 19-year-old sophomore studying communication at the College of Charleston. He is the features editor for The George Street Observer, which is the College's official student newspaper. Werner hails from Fort Mill, S.C. just outside of Charlotte, N.C.

"The College of Charleston wasn't my first choice of schools, but as I look back and think about it, I know I made the right decision," Werner said. "I absolutely love the experiences I've had and friends I've made."

When Werner isn't studying for classes or working to meet a deadline for G, The George Street Observer's popular features magazine, you can find him working with the children who visit the Charleston Children's Museum. Werner wants to pursue a career in the children's books publishing industry. To him, working with the museum and the kids there, on a volunteer basis, is just as good - perhaps even a stepping stone to something better.

So Tommy, when you're not volunteering or in school, what do you do? I work with Cougar Media Network, the student-run student media organization on campus. That's kind of a neat thing because it gives students the chance to not only get published, but manage a very small publishing business. The Network's channels include radio, TV, online and print. Specifically, I manage the features section for The George Street Observer. So, I'm an encourager of creative writing and great experiences.

I also work with the Honors College on the publicity seat for the Honors Student Association. And for that, we put fun stuff together like Mellow Mushroom trivia night. I don't see why every student doesn't come to it every time we have it. It's also been a great experience there.

I also just got into the Charleston 40, which is the group of student's who go around campus and give tours of the College to prospective students and their parents. I just gave my first shadow tour for Accepted Students Weekend.

How do you think your friends and you co-workers would describe you? A lot of people have told me I'm thorough with things. They've told me I'm very thorough, very meticulous, and I like to think things out. I've had my parents and friends call me very organized. But at the same time, they've told me they like that I'm open to try new things and can be witty about stuff.

Why did you decide to volunteer at Charleston Children's Museum? Well I'm interested in doing work in the children's books publishing industry. I thought that volunteering would be a great stepping stone in that direction. Plus, I love working with kids, the museum is close to home and school, and it's not just tutoring children. One of the things I get to do is work on art projects with them. It's a lot of fun looking at this thing in front of us at figuring out what to do together. For example, there was a girl last week who wanted to make a cat out of paper towel rolls. It was hard getting it to stand up, so we worked together and eventually she found a solution.

What surprised you most about volunteering there? Well it's very unpredictable and there are very few set things that I have to do everytime I work. But, there's no telling what happens between the time I check in at 1 p.m. and when I check out at 6 p.m. There really is no telling what I am going to do. One time we had golf ball races. Another time I had to make a Ronald Reagan poster. I would've never thought that would've been part of the job.

How have you benefited personally from this experience? Like I said earlier, it's a career stepping stone. I gives me experience with kids and helps me learn from them too. I can guess where kids are because you can get a good idea of what trends are based on just being around them. But at the same time it's a career stepping stone. I get paid to be there now, so it's been great to move forward with what I'm really interested in and want to do.

What do you enjoy most about community service in general? It's a great way to give back. It's nice to feel like I'm contributing to the Charleston area. It's worth knowing that what I'm doing is going somewhere and it's really not just for me. I do school and newspaper work here and I'll get grades and a paycheck from those, but it's not the same kind of fulfillment you get from community service.

What advice would you give someone thinking about volunteering? Be ready to do stuff that you're not totally comfortable with. I think that's one thing I've had struggles with. Unlike a regular job you're not getting paid to do something you might not want to do or aren't comfortable with. So, because you're not getting paid, it might be harder to get over yourself and just do the things that are necessary. So, my advice is prepare to do the unexpected. And, do it with a smile.

What has been your most memorable experience? Well, I remember a birthday party that I helped to set up. I got to be out on the floor and interact with a tangible audience. I drew on the board, made signs and interacted with people, which was unlike what most of the volunteers did. That was really the best experience I had from when I was volunteering because I got to actually be a part of my passion and career intentions in a very real way for a great organization.

What are you plans for the summer? I am planning to apply for a summer internship to build my experience. And because I'll be home around Charlotte, I'd like to get involved volunteering there as well. If I have time I want to help in the production of this children's play that I was actually an actor in years ago. I just feel it would be a great way to give back in a different way.

BRAD MOTLEY - Salkehatchie Summer Service

Rebuilding Homes with Good Friends

Brad Motley has been a good friend of mine since we met in kindergarten years and years ago. We have been going to the same schools ever since, from elementrary school all the way to College of Charleston. We also went to the same church for a while also, St. Mark United Methodist Church. Brad and I discovered a great program called Salkehatchie Summer Service that is similar to the very popular Habitat for Humanity program. The Salkehatchie Summer Service had many different branches in South Carolina but Brad and I's branch was assigned to Winnsboro, S.C. where our work would take place. Brad and I knew that this would be hard work when we signed up but soon realized that helping the less fortunate by rebuilding their homes was well worth the sweat.

Brad was born and raised in Charleston, S.C. He graduated from West Ashley High School and has just recently graduated from CofC with a bachelor's in computer science in December, 2010. Brad is known for being a "computer wiz" and all of his friends go to him when they have problems with their computers. Not only does Brad have a natural niche in the computer technologies field but he also gained a great deal of experience when working a little over three years at Compuzone, a local computer shop that specialized in computer repair as well.

Volunteer Activities: I don't have a long history in volunteering other than my work at Salkehatchie but I do like to consider taking care of my grandmother when I was younger a "part-time job." Taking care of a my grandmother who is well into her 90s may not constitute as "volunteering" on paper but definitely took much time out of my day. Also, my friends and random customers in Compuzone would sometimes come to me personally to fix their computers on the side. I did my work well at Compuzone and people took note to that, in turn some customers I had would just call my cell phone asking if I could just repair their computer personally. I would charge people most of the time but for friends and preferred customers I would either do it for free or for a discounted price.

What do you enjoy most about community service?: During my volunteering at Salkehatchie I would find myself thinking "this is too much work" and would get pretty tired at times. The thing that I loved most about doing this kind of work is whenever I felt the need to complain or whine I would just look at the faces of the owners of the houses we were rebuiling and be filled with complete gratitude...this feeling would supress such petty thoughts of wanting to complain. Being able to supress my thoughts to want to complain or whine was my favorite thing about my Salkehatchie experience. So I guess you could say getting a little bit tougher was the thing I most enjoyed about my part with community service in Winnsboro.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you?: My friends would most likely describe me as a sarcastic ass and for my family, well...they would probably say the same thing. My friends and family would would most likely say that first but they would also probably say that I'm a good person to talk to when they need advice on anything going on in their lives.

What are your plans after graduation?: Since I'm already graduated from CofC, I'm currently working full time with Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) and I intend to use my skills in computer technologies to further advance myself within the company and climb the corporate ladder. I also just got married and plan on spending some fun years with my wife in the first few years of our marriage then eventually have some kids maybe down the road.

How have you personally benefited from volunterring?: In all honesty, I have become a lot more humble since my volunterring work with Salkehatchie. Seeing people cry in pure joy when seeing their newly repaired homes is quite the feeling and just the right feeling to change somone into a better person. I learned to appreciate the small things in life and to have patience when the time is needed.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?: I would tell anyone who is thinking about volunteering to stop thinking about it and just do it; trust me it will be one of the best decisions you will make in your life. Once someone can make the decision to give and to live their lives altruistically is when they will feel a more positively evolved self.

EMILY THOMPSON- Young Life

A Living Example for Go(o)d

Bright-eyed and goal-driven, Emily Thompson perpetuates the Volunteer Spirit--along with the Holy Spirit--to the youth population in the Charleston community as a part of Young Life.

This international, non-profit organization focuses on building relationships with middle school and high school students, and leaders help these adolescents first-hand through tough trials they may face during pubescence. By participating in weekend trips, activities, and events and by taking the initiative to listen, Emily Thompson extends further than a volunteer--she becomes a friend and a mentor for younger individuals seeking understanding and, in turn, bridges them with their faith through spiritual guidance.

Emily Thompson is new to the College of Charleston but intends on making the most of her first-year experience. She emphasizes her enjoyment of trying new things (her latest conquest being snowboarding in the white-capped mountains of Colorado) and loves applying these experiences in her Young Life community.

Whether Emily stays in the Charleston area or moves as far as Latin America, she looks forward to what the organization has in store for her and intends on remaining a living example of the faith that she advocates.

Volunteer Activities: The volunteer work I do is for a nonprofit Christian organization called Young Life. Young Life is an International Outreach Ministry to high school and middle school students. The mission of Young Life is to introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith. We do so by finding faithful and caring adults who are willing to enter the world of kids in order to build genuine relational bridges. We cross these bridges with the great news that God loves them and has a plan for their lives. These committed adults [staff and volunteers] are called Young Life leaders, and that is what I do--lead kids to the one who can change lives: Jesus Christ.

What do you enjoy most about community service? The thing I love most about Young Life is the relationships I get to build with the high school and middle school kids. It is a true blessing to see how what I say and do changes their lives drastically in every way possible.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience? The most memorable experience I have had from Young Life is when we had an ice cream-themed Young Life club. We had a bunch of games dealing with ice cream, like eating contests and creating different flavors, and at the end we had one huge 10 feet ice cream trough where we could only use our mouths to eat out of it; it ended up turning into the biggest ice cream fight I've ever seen. Just seeing the smiles on the kids' faces and hearing them talk about how cool it was for the next two weeks really showed me how much of an impact Young Life and God are in these kids lives.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organization? I think the thing I am most proud of for contributing to Young Life is probably my personal testimony and walk with God. As Christians, we are told to go out and evangelize in our own specific ways possible to whoever will listen, and this is my way of spreading the love of Christ in my heart to others. Knowing that these kids will no longer feel pain but that they will feel loved is a huge accomplishment.

How did you personally benefit from volunteering? Volunteering for Young Life benefits me in many ways. As a middle-schooler and high-schooler growing up in Spartanburg, I was part of it. I used to be in the exact place of the kids I'm helping with now. My life and relationship with God prospered and grew and changed due to this organization, and it is the exact reason why I'm a leader now. I felt like because it changed and helped me get through my awkward years of school, I could only help give back by doing that for someone else.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? [If someone was considering volunteering for Young Life] I would have to tell them just to do it. It fills your life with some of the greatest memories you will hold forever. It is so much fun and it just the greatest blessing ever. How do you think your friends and family would describe you? My friends and family would describe me as very loving and caring and outgoing and passionate. What are your plans after graduation? After I graduate I actually plan to work for Young Life internationally. I hope to go to Spain and work for the organization there and do as much as possible to help in any way.

JESSE SNIDER- Big Brothers/Big Sisters

A Mentor to Charleston's Youth

While many College of Charleston students spend their Saturday mornings nursing a hangover, Jesse spends his Saturdays mentoring his "little brother" he "adopted" through the Big Brother/Big Sister program. He looks forward to hanging out with his little brother because he finds it rewarding to make a difference in this child's life. Jesse has worked with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program for the last three years. He has also been on multiple missions trips with the youth group he attended in middle school and high school. Through these mission trips he has gotten to work in Mexico, Pennsylvania, West Virgina, Florida, North Carolina, and Colorado. He considers himself honored to have worked on this missions, and to have touched so many lives through them. Along with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, Jesse is also active in CofC's Presbyterian Student Association (PSA). He enjoys being with the students involved in the organization, and their work to touch the lives of local groups here in Charleston.

Volunteer Activities: In the past I've worked on many mission trips with my old youth group. We also worked with the Adopt-A-Highway program and seasonly visited a Presbyterian home in Summerville. Other projects I've worked on in the past are volunteer projects with CofC's Presbyterian Student Association (PSA). We've helped out at soup kitchens, food banks, and community homes. Currently I'm working with Big Brothers/Big Sisters where I'm mentoring a 12 year old boy named Dustin.

What do you enjoy most about community service? I enjoy helping people who are less fortunate than I am, that don't have all the comforts I'm blessed to have. It's always a great thing to see the looks on their faces after you've assisted them.

Most memorable volunteer experience? They're all memorable. I really couldn't choose a specific memory because every trip and volunteer experience is special to me for the lives I am able to touch.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organization(s)? I'm most proud of the thought that I was able to help someone in one way or another. With Dustin [his little] I've given him someone to look up to. His family tells me that he looks forward to us hanging out on the weekend and how he considers me to be like his real big brother.

How have you personally benefited from volunteering? It has taught me how blessed I am. Every time I volunteer it reminds me that there are always people that are more in need than I am.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? I would tell them to just go for it. I won't say volunteering is for everyone, but it's always worth giving it a try. You never know what you might get out of it. You just might have an experience you'll never forget.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you? They would describe me as hardworking, and always willing to help others out. They would certainly I'm responsible. I also think they would say I stick to my commitments.

What are your plans after graduation? No more school, yay!! Seriously though, finding a job as a software developer or IT analyst. Continue to mentor Dustin as long as I have a job in Charleston, and work with PSA as an alumni.

When you meet Brittney Everton, you won't ever forget her. She has a heart of gold and a smile bigger than the moon. She is so fully engaged in everyone else, you feel like her best friend even after first meeting her. Brittney has had a heart for helping others since she was little. When she came to CofC, she found her calling.
Everton found her love in Charleston's Veterans Hospital, where she gets to work first hand with local veterans who absolutely need that smile of hers. With a love for helping others, Everton has devoted her time in the Veterans Hospital, but has divided her time with other activities as well.

What do you enjoy most about community service? I love the feeling of being able to help someone that is less fortunate than myself. If I can make a difference in someone’s life, that is the most rewarding feeling in the world.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience?
Good question..Probably when I was volunteering with the Watchful Eagle Program at the Veterans Hospital and with that program, you are assigned a veteran who has no family or friends and has a terminal condition. My veteran and I were outside the hospital one day and he looked at me and goes, “Thank you for being a friend. Today’s my birthday and you have made it the best one yet.” He died five days later. Just knowing that I impacted someone’s life that drastically has changed my world forever.

What are you most proud of contributing to your organization(s)?
I am most proud about the diversity of organizations that I’ve worked with. They all bring something different to the table and help in different ways. I love that I can bring different ideas to these organizations that I’ve worked with because of my diverse volunteering experiences.

How have you personally benefited from volunteering?
I’ve become entirely more humble and grateful for what I have. I’ve also fallen in love with the need to help people and make an impact in this world.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?
I would tell them to definitely go for it, but only if they are doing it for the right reasons. If they are looking to be applauded and personally thanked every time, they may be disappointed. They should be humble in their good works because I’m a firm believer that boasting about your works is not the way that Jesus himself did.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you?
I think my friends and family would describe me as a loving person and always willing to help people. I’m a bit hard-headed at times because I will help others before myself. But its only for the good!

What are your plans after graduation?
My plans for graduation are still up in the air. I was planning on joining the Navy to become a nurse officer, but after my second knee surgery less than a week ago, I’m not so sure if that’s what God’s plan is for me. So if not, I’m definitely working in the VA with the men and women that risked their lives for this country.

Someone to Learn From

Paul Bradley is no stranger to time management. Not only does he find time to actively volunteer with the Upward Bound Tutoring Program, he is also a Bonner Leadership Representative, a residence assistant for George Street Apartments and a student ambassador for the College.

Oh, and he's only a sophomore taking a full courseload toward his political science degree.

Paul, a graduate of Cross High School in Berkeley County, says volunteering is a big part of his life. He donates several hours a week to Upward Bound by coordinating tutoring for high school students and finding and training college students who want to tutor. He also dedicates many of his holiday breaks and weekends to service trips for the Bonner Leadership Program.

Paul's enthusiasm for helping others is undeniable and his outgoing nature has made him popular on campus. He always greets everyone with a smile and a "hey!" and he is definitely someone to learn from.

What volunteer activities have you been involved in?
I have been a part of the Upward Bound organization for two years and the Bonner Leaders for one year. I am also a student ambassador for the College of Charleston so I go and visit high schools to talk about CofC and get the students interested in coming here. Recently, I went back to my old high school and spoke about preparing for college. Also, I went on a service trip with Bonner over winter break to New Orleans where we learned about how to raise awareness for HIV. I most recently went on another trip with Bonner over Spring Break to San Francisco.

Tell me more about what you do for Upward Bound and Bonner.
For Upward Bound, I am a student coordinator which means that once the Upward Bound staff sees the grades of local high school students, they determine if they need tutoring and I find college students willing to tutor the kids in their core subjects. I also coordinate the tutoring staff and assist the academic coordinator by making an hour-long Power Point presentation every Saturday to high school students who are going to be tutored. I coordinate the orientation for the college students who decide to tutor and I tell them what Upward Bound expects of them and what the proper way to tutor is. For Bonner Leaders, I am a student ambassador. I am asked to volunteer in hosting a high school student, typically on Friday nights during fall and spring semesters, to show them around campus and answer any questions they might have about the College to help them narrow their decision to come here. Most of the service trips I go on are with Bonner also.

What do you most enjoy about community service?
I would have to say the thrill you get from it personally and the lessons that you learn. You also leave a mark in some people's lives that might not have been there unless you came along and helped them.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience?
At the San Francisco trip over Spring Break I stepped out of my comfort zone. I did gardening and I really don't like the outdoors. I had to weed, shovel manure, do compost and a lot of other stuff that I didn't want to do at first but in the end it was a great experience and it will always stick in my mind.

What are you most proud of contributing through volunteering? As a student coordinator for Upward Bound, I can touch someone's life and am helping someone that is just like me because Upward Bound is catering to first-generation, low-income high school students. I was part of the program through Trident Tech when I was in high school and to give back to them now and know that the people that I help appreciate me is the best thing that I get. I am helping people in the same way that I was helped to get to where I am.

How have you personally benefited from volunteering?
Because I have been so active in Upward Bound during the school year, I have been offered a summer job there for the past two summers which has been great.

What would you tell someone who is interested in volunteering? I would tell them to try to get into the Bonner Leaders if they are really, really driven about service. If they can't get into Bonner, stop by the civic engagement service office and they can help you find somewhere to volunteer. Also, you can do your own research and find something that the office might not know about and that you may never have realized had a need.

How do your friends and family describe you?
They would say I'm outspoken, real, confident, determined, ambitious, caring, helpful, honest, bubbly and photogenic.

What are your plan after graduation?
I plan to go to law school and get certified to practice corporate and family law. I don't think I want to go to Charleston Law School, though. I will have been in Charleston for four years going here. I want to move on to the next experience and go somewhere new.

Virginia Green - Darkness to Light

Virginia Green is eccentric and extraordinarily quirky. As a full time student, part-time barista, horse back rider, Ultimate frisbee player, an avid yoga enthusiast, and dog owner, Virginia has an extremely limited amount of free time. As hectic as her life is, Virginia dedicates copious amounts of her time to an organization called Darkness to Light.

Darkness to Light works diligently to prevent child sexual abuse. They do this by running programs that raise awareness of the prevalence and consequences of child sexual abuse by educating adults as to the steps that can be taken to prevent, recognize and react appropriately to the reality of child sexual abuse.

Virginia has volunteered her time and attention to Darkness to Light for years and has recently been awarded a paid position.

Sitting down with Virginia to discuss the questions for the Cougar Volunteer Spirit website was an undeniably enjoyable experience. Virginia is a woman who exudes confidence and contentedness - the kind of person to make you laugh before you even take a seat.

What volunteer activities have you recently participated in?

I used to volunteer at a local nursing home, but recently I've just spread myself so thin that I can only really focus on Darkness to Light now. In the past year, I've volunteered over 100 hours of my time to D2L and I don't regret one second of it.

What do you most enjoy about community service?

Networking. I've met a lot of people in several different industries through volunteering for D2L. Community service also shows that you're not only responsible, capable and not solely monetarily driven. All of the people you meet along the way will remember that and be much more likely to hire you later.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience?

I would have to say that being promoted to a paid position has been the most memorable experience for me. It was really an honor to have my efforts recognized in such a positive way. I know that it's not a memory of what we're working for at D2L, but it definitely has been a highlight of my time there. Being recognized for doing something that you know is beneficial for others is an amazing feeling.

What are you most proud of contributing to Darkness to Light?

Knowing that I, along with the help and hard work of a team of dedicated people, may be able to either protect a child from sexual abuse or perhaps provide someone who has experienced child sexual abuse with the resources to cope and lead a healthy life is definitely something I'm proud of. I'm proud of every moment I contribute to Darkness to Light because every second I'm there, I'm doing something that truly helps others and that is something to be proud of.

How have you personally benefitted from volunteering?

Well, I got a great job out of it, as well as a guaranteed job after graduation, should I choose to accept it. But I've also gained a lot of self-confidence and happiness through volunteering. Helping other people just makes you feel good about yourself. The fact that something you are doing is benefitting person in need, especially a victim of child sexual abuse, is an extremely gratifying feeling.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?

TO DO IT. Feels good. Looks good. Does good.

How do you think your friends and family would describe you?

Umm...I don't really know. I guess loud and outgoing and perky. Depends who you ask I guess, My friends would probably say wild and impulsive at times. I like to try new things and explore new places and ideas. I'm an out-of-the-box kind of thinker.

What are your plans after graduation?

SO MANY. I want to do a million different things. I would love to continue my work with Darkness to Light, but after graduation, so many new options will be available to me. I think what I really want to do is to do humanitarian aid work for a relief effort in an Arab state or maybe Africa. I'm taking Arabic classes right now to prepare myself for that because its something I really am considering. I also think it would be interesting to start a magazine or periodical. Maybe I'll join a band of gypsies and make my living reading fortunes, who knows?

How can someone who wants to volunteer for Darkness to Light do so?

There is ALWAYS work to be done, so if you want to volunteer and are capable, you will definitely be put to work. If someone is interested though, they can go to http://www.d2l.org/.

SARA SILBERSTEIN- Jewish National Fund Alternative Spring Break in Israel

A Great Alternative for Spring Break

While many students spend their Spring Break playing in the sand, jumping in the water, and eating tropical fruits, Sara Silberstein spent her break digging sand, mixing it with water, and picking fruit for the needy as she worked on several landscaping, environmental, and charitable service projects in Israel.

From March 5-13, while on the Jewish National Fund's (JNF) Alternative Spring Break (ASB) in Israel, Silberstein and peers from around the nation took part in a variety of service activity aimed at bringing a renewed sense of life to Israel's southern region, as well as the Carmel Forrest, which was largely destroyed by a recent forest fire. I sat down with Silberstein and she told me all about the "best Spring Break" she's ever had.

What do you enjoy most about community service? The feeling of helping other people and seeing how much you can accomplish when you work on a project. For example, we were able to repaint an entire low-income government apartment complex in one morning, a job that would have taken several weeks for maintenance workers to do.

What was your most memorable volunteer experience? When we picked grapefruit. They told us that the fruit we picked in 45 minutes would feed 600 families. I felt proud that I was able to help so many people just by giving a little bit of my time.

How have you personally benefitted from volunteering? I've become a better person for helping those in need. In my opinion, it's really the least I can do for a country and people that mean so much to me.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? You should definitely do it. They need your help and you can really make a difference. While it is a lot of work, it's also a lot of fun to help other those in other communities.

How would your friends and family describe you? Awesome. Just kidding. I think they would describe me as someone that cares about other people and is thoughtful and nice.

What are your plans for after you graduate? I want to travel for a little bit and then eventually settle down with a job in hospitality. I would definitely be interested in doing ASB again, since it is open to anyone who is 18-26 years old.
